About CodeKeep
What is CodeKeep?
CodeKeep keeps your door, gate, key safe and padlock codes encrypted on your iPhone or Android phone. Give each code a precise pin on the map and CodeKeep shows you the nearest one wherever you are, hidden until you tap to reveal it.
What’s new in Version 2?
CodeKeep Version 2 is a brand-new app, rebuilt from the ground up. It puts the nearest code at the top of the list, adds a Nearby map, categories, notes, directions, tap to reveal with auto-hide, Face ID and fingerprint lock, encrypted backup, encrypted export, apps for Apple Watch and Wear OS, and a Nearest Code widget for your home screen and CarPlay. It’s also the first version of CodeKeep for Android.
How much does CodeKeep cost?
CodeKeep is a single purchase on the App Store, and is coming soon to Google Play. The store shows the price in your local currency. There’s no subscription and no ads, the watch app is included, and up to five other family members can use CodeKeep at no extra cost.
I bought CodeKeep Version 1. Do I have to pay again?
No. If you bought CodeKeep Version 1, you can get CodeKeep Version 2 for free. Send us your receipt and we’ll reply with a promo code. See how to claim your upgrade.
Can I move my codes from CodeKeep Version 1?
CodeKeep Version 1 doesn’t have an export option, so codes need to be added to CodeKeep Version 2 by hand. Both apps can be installed at the same time, so there’s no rush. Our upgrade guide has tips to make it quicker.
Security and backup
How are my codes stored?
Your codes are encrypted on your phone. On iPhone they’re kept in the iPhone Keychain, which iOS encrypts and only opens while your iPhone is unlocked. On Android they’re encrypted with a key held in the Android Keystore. Turn on Secure App Access in Settings to require your face, fingerprint or passcode to open CodeKeep, and choose how long it can stay unlocked in the background.
How does tap to reveal work?
Codes stay hidden until you tap them. Once revealed, a code hides again after the time you choose in Settings › Auto-Hide After. If you’d rather see your codes all the time, turn off Hide Codes.
Is it safe to copy a code?
Copied codes are removed from the clipboard after one minute. On iPhone they’re never shared with your other devices through Universal Clipboard. On Android they’re marked as sensitive, so they’re hidden in clipboard previews.
How does encrypted backup work?
Turn it on in Settings and choose a passphrase. CodeKeep encrypts your codes with AES-256 using a key derived from that passphrase, then backs them up automatically after every change. On iPhone the backup goes to your own iCloud Drive, and you can save the passphrase to your iCloud Keychain to make restoring on a new iPhone easier. On Android you choose the folder, on your phone or in a cloud storage app such as Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. We can’t read your backup, and if you forget your passphrase we can’t recover it, so keep it somewhere safe.
Can I export my codes?
Yes. Go to Settings › Data Export. We strongly recommend the encrypted CodeKeep format (.ckexport), which is the one you can import back into CodeKeep, on iPhone or Android. Password-protected ZIP and plain CSV, JSON or text exports are there too, but unencrypted files can be read by anyone who has them.
Can I move my codes between iPhone and Android?
Yes. CodeKeep uses the same encrypted files on both. Export your codes in the CodeKeep format on your old phone and open the file in CodeKeep on your new one, or restore an encrypted backup file you’ve copied across, then enter your passphrase. Codes don’t sync automatically between an iPhone and an Android phone: each keeps its own copy.
Does CodeKeep collect my data?
No. There’s no account and no ads, and CodeKeep doesn’t collect or sell personal information. Your codes and location stay on your devices. Read our Privacy Policy for the details.
Devices and features
Which devices does CodeKeep run on?
On Apple devices, CodeKeep runs on iPhone with iOS 17.6 or later, and includes an Apple Watch app for watchOS 10 or later. On Android, it runs on phones and tablets with Android 10 or later, and includes a Wear OS app for Wear OS 4 or later. An Apple Watch needs an iPhone, and a Wear OS watch needs an Android phone. The Android version is coming soon to Google Play.
Does CodeKeep support family sharing?
Yes. If you use Family Sharing on the App Store or Family Library on Google Play, up to five other family members can download CodeKeep at no extra cost. Each person’s codes stay on their own devices and aren’t shared with the rest of the family.
How does “nearest” work?
CodeKeep uses your location on your phone to show the closest code at the top of the list, with the distance to each code. Open the Nearby map to see all the codes around you. In Settings › Location Search you can set the maximum range and how far you need to move before the list refreshes.
How do categories work?
Give each code a category such as Car Park, Door, Gate, Key Safe, Padlock or Locker, or create your own. Tap a category at the top of the list to filter your codes.
How does the Nearest Code widget work?
The widget shows the code closest to you on your home screen and, on iPhone with iOS 26, on your CarPlay dashboard. It’s off until you turn on Settings › Widget › Show Nearest Code, and you can choose which categories it’s allowed to show. Only codes with a saved location are included. Bear in mind that a code shown in the widget can be seen on your home screen without opening CodeKeep, and in CarPlay while your iPhone is locked.
How do the watch apps work?
Your phone sends your codes to your paired Apple Watch or Wear OS watch, where they’re stored encrypted on the watch, so the app works even when your phone isn’t nearby. The watch shows the nearest code, which you tap to reveal, plus other codes nearby. On Apple Watch, add the CodeKeep complication to your watch face to open it quickly. On Wear OS, the Tile and complication show the nearest place and its distance, but never the code. A Wear OS watch only shows codes if it has a screen lock.
Does CodeKeep work offline?
Mostly. Your codes are stored on your phone, so the list, search and reveal work with no signal. Maps, addresses and backup catch up when you’re back online.
Does CodeKeep support Dark Mode?
Yes. CodeKeep follows your phone’s appearance setting.
What languages does CodeKeep support?
CodeKeep is currently available in English.
